The BALAX 31013-000 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in metric M3x0.5 applications. Made from M42 powdered metal high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it is built for consistent performance across a range of softer and mid-hardness workpiece materials. The plug chamfer and three-flute spiral point geometry push chips forward through the hole, keeping the cutting zone clear during production tapping. With an overall length of 1.9375 inches and a thread length of 0.625 inches, this tap fits standard toolholders used in machining and fabrication environments. It conforms to a 6H class of fit and a D3 thread limit for controlled tolerance output.
The 31013-000 is suited for through-hole tapping operations in machine shops, production facilities, and maintenance environments where M3x0.5 metric threads are required. It is rated for use in low-carbon steel, 300 series stainless steel, wrought aluminum alloy, die cast aluminum, die cast zinc, magnesium, copper, brass, and bronze castings. Right-hand thread direction and a 5/16 inch neck length make it compatible with standard tapping heads and CNC toolholding setups used in light manufacturing and precision machining.
Designed for through-hole threading in low-carbon steel, 300 stainless steel, wrought aluminum alloy, die cast aluminum, die cast zinc, magnesium, copper, brass, and bronze castings. Part of the BALAX BX100 series.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with tapping operations and cutting tool safety. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage, particularly at small diameters like M3. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material before and during the tapping operation. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
