The BALAX 18479-91C is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for M6x1.00 metric coarse threads with a 6H class of fit. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap is engineered for cold-forming internal threads in steel without cutting or generating chips. Thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with better surface finish. The TiCN coating reduces friction and extends tool life in demanding steel applications. With a D9 thread limit, a 0.79-inch thread length, and an overall length of 2.5 inches, this tap is suited for precision blind hole work in production and job-shop environments.
The 18479-91C is intended for blind hole threading in steel workpieces where chip evacuation is a concern and thread strength is a priority. The bottoming chamfer - approximately 2.5 threads - allows the tap to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. This tap is installed by machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance professionals using standard tapping equipment or CNC machining centers. The BXSTEEL series is specifically developed for steel material applications, making this tap appropriate for both manual and machine tapping operations where consistent 6H thread accuracy is required.
Designed for blind hole threading in steel per the BXSTEEL series application. Suitable for use with standard M6x1.00 metric tap holders, floating tap adapters, and rigid CNC tapping cycles where right-hand threading is required.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - not a standard cut tap drill - to achieve the correct 6H fit; consult a forming tap drill chart for the M6x1.00 size before machining. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for steel to the tap and workpiece before operation. Ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are matched to the tap manufacturer recommendations for thread forming in steel. Do not use this tap in cast iron, brittle materials, or any material that does not have sufficient ductility for cold forming.
