The BALAX 18405-010 is an extension thread forming tap designed for cutting metric coarse internal threads in ductile materials without producing chips. Built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap forms M6 x 1 threads using a bottoming chamfer profile, making it well-suited for blind-hole applications where full thread engagement near the bottom of the bore is required. The D5 thread limit and 4H class of fit provide consistent dimensional accuracy for metric threaded assemblies. At 4 inches overall length, the extended reach allows access to recessed or deep workpiece features that standard-length taps cannot reach.
This tap is used in machining and fabrication environments where metric coarse threads are specified and chip-free forming is preferred over cutting. The bottoming chamfer style makes it a direct choice for blind holes requiring maximum thread depth. The right-hand flute direction and reduced-shank-free geometry suit standard tap holders and extension adapters on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping setups. Machinists, toolmakers, and production operators working with steel, aluminum, and other ductile metals will find this tap appropriate for general threading operations in the M6 pitch range.
Designed as an OEM-style tooling solution for M6 x 1 metric coarse thread forming applications in ductile materials. Fits standard tap holders accepting a 0.255 inch shank diameter within the BALAX BXEXT series.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication with an appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material; consult material-specific recommendations before use. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the bore axis before beginning the threading cycle. De-energize or fully stop any power equipment before changing or inspecting tooling. Tap torque requirements for thread forming are higher than for cutting taps of the same size, so verify that the tapping attachment or machine spindle torque capacity is sufficient.
