The BALAX 18278-91C is a bottoming thread forming tap designed for creating internal M5x0.80 metric coarse threads in steel workpieces. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a superior surface finish. This tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) for improved wear resistance and toughness over conventional HSS, and carries a TiCN coating to reduce friction and extend tool life in demanding applications. The 6H class of fit and D8 thread limit provide consistent tolerance control suited to precision fastener applications. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.6 inch thread length, this tap fits standard tapping chucks and holders used in production and job-shop environments.
The 18278-91C is intended for blind hole threading in steel components, where chip evacuation is not possible and a forming approach is preferred. The bottoming chamfer of 2.5 threads allows the tap to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it well-suited for shallow-hole applications in automotive, fabrication, and general machining operations. The single oil groove aids lubrication during the forming process. Right-hand thread direction is standard. This tap is used by machinists, tool and die makers, and production CNC operators working with steel materials.
Designed for blind hole threading in steel materials. Part of the BALAX BXSTEEL series, optimized for use in steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tapping chucks and holders accepting a 0.194 inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard tap drill - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct M5x0.80 forming drill diameter before use. Always apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for steel to the tap and workpiece before and during tapping. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the hole axis to prevent tap breakage, particularly in blind hole applications. This tool should be installed and operated by qualified machinists following applicable shop safety procedures and equipment manufacturer guidelines.
