The BALAX 17516-010 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for cutting M2.6x0.45 metric coarse internal threads to a 6H class of fit. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with no swarf. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and carries a D6 thread limit designation. It is suited for blind hole threading operations in ductile metals and is typically installed by machinists, tool and die workers, and precision fabricators working with small metric fastener sizes.
This tap is used in blind hole threading applications where a full-form thread is required close to the bottom of the bore. The bottoming chamfer, with approximately 2.5 threads of lead, allows thread forming to begin near the base of the hole. It fits production and job-shop environments handling small metric hardware, instrument components, and assemblies requiring M2.6 thread engagement. The BXMB series designation indicates its form-tap geometry and dimensional class within the BALAX product line.
Designed for use in blind hole threading applications requiring M2.6x0.45 metric coarse threads at a 6H class of fit. Suitable for use in standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping machines accommodating small-shank tooling with a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pre-drill diameter before use, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Ensure the workpiece material is sufficiently ductile; thread forming is not recommended for brittle materials such as cast iron or hardened steel. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to reduce heat and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece firmly and align the tap perpendicular to the hole to avoid tap breakage, which is a significant risk at this small diameter.
