The BALAX 14065-000 is a thread forming tap in the BXP series, designed for producing internal threads in ductile and malleable materials without cutting or chip generation. It uses cold-forming action to displace material and create a 1/2-13 UNC thread profile. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish. It carries a plug chamfer with 4 chamfered threads for guided entry into a pre-drilled hole. The H5 thread limit and Class 3B fit designation make it suited for close-tolerance threaded connections requiring consistent thread geometry. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the typical users for this tap in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications in materials such as aluminum, copper, brass, mild steel, and other ductile metals where chipless thread forming is preferred. The plug chamfer style makes it practical for through-holes where full thread engagement is needed near the start of the hole. With a thread length of 1 inch and an overall length of 3.375 inches, it fits standard tap handles and machine spindles used in both bench and CNC tapping operations. Right-hand thread direction is standard for conventional UNC fastener systems.
Designed for through-hole threading of 1/2-13 UNC right-hand threads in ductile and malleable materials. Fits standard tap handles and machine tapping attachments accepting a 0.367-inch shank diameter with a 0.275-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill - consult a forming tap drill chart before use. Apply tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for thread forming to the tap and workpiece before starting. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap enters the hole perpendicularly to avoid cross-threading or tap breakage. In machine tapping, use a floating tap holder to compensate for minor misalignment.
