The BALAX 14045-000 is a thread forming tap in the BXB series, designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC internal threads in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. This tap features a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. It is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and carries a thread limit of H5 for tight tolerance control. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap in production and maintenance applications where thread integrity is critical.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in ductile and malleable materials such as mild steel, aluminum, and copper alloys. The bottoming chamfer style makes it the right choice when maximum thread depth in a stopped hole is required. With an overall length of 3.375 inches and a thread length of 1 inch, it fits standard tap holders and CNC tapping heads. The single oil groove supports lubrication flow during the forming process, and the right-hand thread direction is standard for the majority of threaded fastener applications in industrial and MRO environments.
Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring 1/2-13 UNC right-hand internal threads in ductile and malleable workpiece materials. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping heads sized for a 0.367-inch shank diameter and 0.275-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a specifically sized forming tap drill hole - consult a thread forming tap drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter, as it differs from a standard cut tap drill size. A cutting oil or tapping fluid rated for thread forming should be applied to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is driven in a straight, aligned path to avoid tap breakage. Power down and secure all machinery before changing or inspecting taps.
