The BALAX 13265-010 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in 5/16-24 UNF applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from the hole. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a thread length of 0.880 inches and a tapping depth of 1.125 inches. It is suited for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and toolroom professionals working with ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap is built for blind hole threading where chip evacuation is not practical and material flow is preferred over material removal. The bottoming chamfer makes it particularly useful in applications requiring threads that extend as deep as possible in a limited-depth hole. With a right-hand thread direction and Class 3B fit at thread limit H5, it produces close-tolerance threads appropriate for precision fastener applications in manufacturing, maintenance, and repair environments. The BXB series designation identifies it within the BALAX thread forming product line.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use thread forming tap for 5/16-24 UNF blind hole threading operations in standard tap holders and tapping machines accepting a 0.318-inch shank diameter with a 0.238-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require proper cutting fluid or tapping compound applied before use to reduce heat and extend tool life. Ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece before engaging to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. Secure the workpiece firmly and use a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping cycle appropriate for the material being tapped. Follow applicable shop safety practices and manufacturer recommendations for spindle speed and feed rate when power tapping.
