The BALAX 12887-000 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 1/4-28 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger, work-hardened threads with no chips to clear. Built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it is suited for use in ductile metals and soft materials. The plug chamfer style with 4 chamfered threads provides a gradual entry into the workpiece. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a tapping depth of 1.0 inch, making it practical for standard through-hole threading work in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations in shop, manufacturing, and maintenance settings. The 1/4-28 UNF thread specification covers fine-pitch fastener applications common in automotive, aerospace, and precision mechanical assemblies. The right-hand thread direction and 2B class of fit make it compatible with standard UNF fasteners. The BXP series designation from BALAX indicates a thread forming design optimized for speed and thread quality in appropriate workpiece materials. Installation is performed by machinists and tool and die technicians using a tapping machine, drill press, or CNC machine center.
Designed for through-hole threading operations requiring a 1/4-28 UNF, 2B class of fit internal thread. Suitable for use in ductile materials compatible with thread forming processes.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size larger than that used for cutting taps - consult BALAX or standard forming tap drill charts before drilling the pilot hole. Proper cutting fluid or tapping oil must be applied to extend tap life and maintain thread quality. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is driven perpendicular to the work surface to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with thread forming operations.
