The BALAX 12772-91C is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads without cutting, using material displacement to create stronger, chip-free threads. Sized for 1/4-20 UNC threads with a 2B class of fit and H8 thread limit, this bottoming tap reaches close to the bottom of blind holes with only 2.5 chamfered threads at the lead. Constructed from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, it is built for demanding production use in steel applications. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and maintenance professionals working with threaded assemblies in steel components will find this tap appropriate for high-volume or precision blind hole threading operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in steel workpieces where thread quality and hole-bottom clearance are critical. The bottoming chamfer geometry allows threading close to the base of a stopped hole, making it effective in tight-tolerance assemblies. With a tapping depth of 1.0 inch and a thread length of 0.79 inches, it is well matched to standard shallow-to-mid-depth blind hole applications. It is intended for use in production environments, tool rooms, and field repair situations where right-hand 1/4-20 UNC internal threads are required in steel.
Designed for right-hand 1/4-20 UNC blind hole threading in steel workpieces as part of the BALAX BXSTEEL series of thread forming taps.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication and correct speed selection for the workpiece material - follow the manufacturer speed and feed recommendations for powdered metal HSS taps in steel. Ensure the tap holder provides proper axial float to prevent thread distortion. Secure the workpiece firmly and confirm the drilled hole diameter is sized correctly for thread forming, as pilot hole diameter is critical and differs from cutting tap requirements. This tap is not suitable for through-hole or cast iron applications where forming is not appropriate.
