The BALAX 12664-000 is a thread forming tap designed for through-hole threading applications in metal fabrication, maintenance, and production work. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this plug-chamfer tap cold-forms a 1/4-20 UNC internal thread without cutting chips, reducing the risk of chip contamination in blind or through-hole assemblies. It carries a Class 3B fit and an H4 thread limit, delivering tight tolerances suited for precision fastener applications. The BXP series design includes a single oil groove to aid lubrication during the forming process. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a tapping depth of 1.0 inch.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading in ductile and malleable materials such as aluminum, brass, low-carbon steel, and similar workpiece metals. The plug chamfer, with 4 chamfered threads, allows for easy starting in a pre-drilled hole and is the standard choice for general through-hole production tapping. It is used by machinists, tool and die makers, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with 1/4-20 UNC fastener specifications in both job-shop and production-line environments.
Designed for through-hole threading applications requiring a 1/4-20 UNC internal thread at Class 3B fit. Consult tooling references or the BALAX application guide for recommended tap drill sizes and compatible workpiece materials for the BXP series.
Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming drill rather than a standard tap drill; using an undersized hole will overload the tap and risk breakage. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material before and during the tapping operation. Secure the workpiece firmly and use a calibrated tap wrench or CNC tapping cycle to maintain proper axial alignment. Always power down or de-energize any machine tool before manually handling or changing tooling.
