The BALAX 12663-000 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 1/4-20 UNC internal threads in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries an H3 thread limit tolerance, making it well suited for close-tolerance threading work. The plug chamfer style with 4 chamfered threads allows the tap to start easily and feed smoothly into the workpiece. It is used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working in metal and similar formable materials.
The BALAX 12663-000 belongs to the BXP series and is intended for through-hole threading in production and maintenance environments. Its right-hand thread direction and single oil groove support proper lubrication during the forming process. At 2.5 inches overall length and 0.255 inches shank diameter, this tap fits standard tap holders and drive tools. It is commonly used in shops, field maintenance, and assembly operations where 1/4-20 UNC threaded holes are required in formable materials such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel.
Designed for through-hole threading applications requiring 1/4-20 UNC right-hand threads in formable materials. Fits standard tap holders and machine drives accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require the correct tap drill size for the material being tapped - consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart before drilling pilot holes, as forming taps use a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil throughout the operation. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is driven straight and true to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. This tap is not suitable for brittle materials such as cast iron where chip-free forming is not applicable.
