The BALAX 12208-000 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 10-32 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries a plug chamfer with 4 chamfered threads for controlled entry. The H8 thread limit designation makes it suitable for standard tolerance threading operations. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.194-inch shank diameter, it fits standard tap holders used in machining and fabrication environments. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in materials compatible with cold-forming, including low-carbon steel, aluminum, brass, and similar ductile metals. The plug chamfer makes it well suited for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand tapping operations where through-hole access is available. With a tapping depth of 0.875 inches and a thread length of 0.600 inches, it handles typical fastener depths for 10-32 UNF hardware commonly found in electronics enclosures, instrumentation panels, and light mechanical assemblies.
Designed for through-hole threading operations requiring a 10-32 UNF thread form in ductile materials. Fits standard tap holders and collets sized for a 0.194-inch shank diameter with a 0.152-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or tapping fluid to reduce heat and forming load - dry tapping is not recommended. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole to avoid cross-threading or tap breakage. Always use a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle appropriate for the material being formed. Follow shop safety practices and machine guarding requirements during any tapping operation.
