The BALAX 12207-000 is a thread forming tap designed for through-hole threading in ductile materials. Unlike cutting taps, this plug-chamfer forming tap cold-forms the thread profile without producing chips, resulting in stronger, work-hardened threads. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright uncoated finish, it is suited for production and maintenance applications where clean internal threads are required. The plug chamfer provides 4 chamfered threads for controlled starting in through-hole applications. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.600 inches and a tapping depth of 0.875 inches, making it compact and easy to control in tight setups.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations producing 10-32 UNF right-hand internal threads. It is used in metalworking, machinery assembly, HVAC equipment manufacturing, and general industrial maintenance where high-strength internal threads in through-holes are needed. The BXP series designation indicates this tap is optimized for forming rather than cutting, requiring no chip clearance during operation. It is appropriate for use in materials such as aluminum, copper, mild steel, and other ductile metals that respond well to cold-forming thread production.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and tapping machines that accept a 0.194-inch shank diameter. Suitable for through-hole thread forming in ductile materials requiring 10-32 UNF internal threads.
Thread forming taps require a forming tap drill size, which is larger than the drill size used for cutting taps - consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct hole preparation diameter before use. Apply a quality tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to ensure proper lubrication and tool life. Secure the tap in a rigid holder to maintain axial alignment and prevent tap breakage. Always back the tap out of the hole upon completion to relieve any spring-back in the formed threads.
