The BALAX 12046-010 is a thread forming extension tap sized for 10-24 UNC threads with an H6 thread limit. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from blind holes. This tap features a bottoming chamfer for threading close to the bottom of a hole. The 6 inch overall length makes it suited for reaching recessed bosses or deep cavities that standard-length taps cannot access. Built from high-speed steel in a bright, uncoated finish, the 12046-010 is part of the BALAX BXEXT series and is used by machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians working in ductile or malleable materials.
This extension tap is used in production machining, job shop, and maintenance-repair-overhaul environments where 10-24 UNC threaded holes must be formed in materials such as aluminum, brass, low-carbon steel, and other formable metals. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading to near-full depth in blind holes. The 6 inch OAL and right-hand flute direction are appropriate for standard right-hand spindle setups on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping arms. The reduced-shank design is not present on this tap, and the 1/4 inch square drive end accepts standard tap wrenches and holders.
Designed for use in applications requiring 10-24 UNC right-hand internal threads in ductile, chip-free formable materials. Fits standard tap holders and tapping arms accepting a 1/4 inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require the correct pilot hole diameter for the specific material being tapped - consult a thread forming drill chart before use, as forming taps use a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage, particularly in deep-hole applications. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material. This operation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with thread forming processes.
