The BALAX 11963-01T is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than removing chips, resulting in stronger threads and eliminating the need for chip clearance in the hole. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it well suited for shallow or restricted-depth applications. It carries a H3 thread limit and a right-hand thread direction.
This tap is used in metalworking and light manufacturing environments where 10-24 UNC threads are required in blind holes. The bottoming chamfer, with 2.5 chamfered threads, lets machinists and tooling professionals thread within tight depth tolerances in drilled blind holes. The BXB series designation indicates this is a forming tap optimized for ductile materials such as aluminum, mild steel, and similar metals. It is a standard choice for production threading operations in machine shops, assembly lines, and maintenance environments.
Designed for blind hole threading in ductile materials requiring 10-24 UNC right-hand internal threads. Fits standard tap holders and chucks accepting a 0.1940-inch shank diameter with a 0.1520-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is typically larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread. Consult a forming tap drill chart for the correct hole diameter before use. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the material being tapped to protect both the tap and the workpiece. Secure the tap in a rigid holder to maintain alignment and prevent tap breakage, particularly near the bottom of blind holes.
