The BALAX 11642-000 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC threads in through-hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, this plug-style forming tap displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger, work-hardened threads with no chips to clear from the hole. Made from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it is suited for use in softer metals, plastics, and other formable materials. The H2 thread limit provides a standard tolerance class appropriate for most general fastener fits. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a tapping depth of 0.75 inches.
This tap is used in production and maintenance environments where 8-32 UNC through-hole threading is required. The plug chamfer, with 4 chamfered threads, provides a gradual lead-in that distributes forming load progressively into the workpiece. It is well suited for CNC tapping centers, drill presses, and hand tapping operations where chip-free threading is a priority. The BXP series designation indicates a standard forming geometry designed for general-purpose through-hole work in ferrous and non-ferrous materials that are ductile enough to be formed rather than cut.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in materials with sufficient ductility, including aluminum, mild steel, brass, and thermoplastics commonly encountered in light manufacturing and maintenance applications.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread - consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Adequate lubrication is critical to tool life and thread quality; use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before starting. Always power down machinery and follow lockout-tagout procedures before performing maintenance tapping operations on installed equipment.
