The BALAX 11046-010 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 5-40 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread by displacing material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is built from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H6 thread limit designation indicates controlled oversize tolerance suitable for standard UNC thread fits. Overall length is 1.9375 inches with a threaded length of 0.625 inches.
This tap is suited for use in production and maintenance environments where small-diameter blind hole threading is required. The 5-40 UNC designation is common in precision assemblies, instrument panels, small enclosures, and electrical equipment where compact fastener threads are needed. It is used with a tap wrench or machine tapping setup by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with ferrous and non-ferrous materials that have adequate ductility for cold forming.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in 5-40 UNC applications. Thread forming requires a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard tap drill size. Consult BALAX BXB series forming drill charts for correct pre-drill diameter before use.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, not a standard tap drill, to achieve proper thread form and fit. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound recommended for the workpiece material to reduce forming load and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap enters the hole perpendicular to the surface. A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance technician should verify thread fit with a go/no-go gauge after forming.
