The BALAX 10722-010 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 4-40 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries an H2 thread limit for close-tolerance work. The bottoming chamfer - 2.5 threads of lead - allows threading to the bottom of a blind hole. It is used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with small-diameter fastener threads in ductile metals.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in soft to medium-hardness ductile materials such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel where chipless thread forming is preferred. The 4-40 UNC thread form is common in instrument panels, electronics enclosures, small mechanical assemblies, and precision fixtures. The BXB series designation indicates BALAX standard thread forming geometry. With a 0.5625 inch thread length and 1.875 inch overall length, this tap fits standard tap holders used for small-diameter threading operations.
Designed for use in ductile materials requiring 4-40 UNC internal threads in blind hole configurations. Fits standard tap holders and driver chucks sized for small-diameter taps with a 0.1100 inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole - consult a thread forming drill size chart for 4-40 UNC before drilling, as forming tap drill sizes differ from cutting tap drill sizes. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material before tapping. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap enters the hole straight to avoid tap breakage, which is a significant risk at this small diameter. This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or trained technician familiar with small-diameter tapping procedures.
