The BALAX 10287-01T is a thread forming tap designed to cut 2-56 UNC threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life. It features a bottoming chamfer with 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H7 thread limit designates a specific tolerance class suited for producing accurately sized internal threads. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians use this tap in precision threading operations across a range of industries.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in ductile materials where chip-free thread forming is required. The bottoming chamfer design allows threading to within a short distance of the hole bottom, making it appropriate for shallow blind holes where thread engagement depth is critical. At 1.75 inches overall length with a 0.4375-inch thread length and a 0.141-inch shank diameter, it is sized for small-diameter precision work. It is used in machine shop environments on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping machines where accurate thread depth and form are required.
Designed for use in standard 2-56 UNC blind hole threading applications in ductile metals and plastics where thread forming taps are appropriate. Verify hole diameter per thread forming tap drill charts before use, as forming taps require a different pilot hole size than cutting taps.
Thread forming taps should be installed and operated by qualified machinists familiar with proper speeds, feeds, and tapping lubricants for the material being threaded. Always use a recommended tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material to prevent galling and extend tool life. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before engagement to avoid tap breakage. Power down all equipment before changing tooling.
