The BALAX 10287-010 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 2-56 UNC internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material, resulting in stronger threads and eliminating the need for chip clearance. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish and carries an H7 thread limit designation. It is well suited for use in soft metals and ductile materials where roll-forming is practical. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians reach for this style of tap when thread integrity and blind-hole performance are priorities.
The 10287-010 is configured with a bottoming chamfer, making it the correct choice for threading close to the bottom of blind holes where a plug or taper chamfer would leave unthreaded material. With 2.5 chamfered threads, it begins forming near the bottom of the drilled hole with minimal runout. This tap is a standard selection for precision assembly work in electronics, instrumentation, and light mechanical applications where the 2-56 UNC thread size is specified. It belongs to the BALAX BXB series of thread forming taps.
Designed for use in blind-hole threading applications requiring 2-56 UNC right-hand threads. Suited for soft metals and ductile materials where thread forming is appropriate. Verify material suitability before use, as thread forming is not recommended for brittle or hard materials.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill - consult the BALAX recommended drill chart for the 2-56 UNC size, as the correct drill diameter differs from standard cut-tap drill sizes. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil before use. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap driver or CNC tapping head set to the correct spindle speed for the material. Do not use thread forming taps in cast iron, hardened steel, or other brittle materials.
