The ASPEN 3980 is a fixed refrigerant metering piston designed to regulate refrigerant flow in split-system and packaged cooling equipment. With a 0.065-inch orifice diameter, this piston meters refrigerant entering the evaporator coil at the rated capacity of 3 tons. It is factory-sized for use with R-454B, a low-GWP A2L refrigerant increasingly specified in newer residential and light-commercial systems. HVAC technicians install this component as part of a metering device replacement or coil changeout. Fixed-orifice pistons are straightforward to swap and do not require adjustment after installation.
The ASPEN 3980 is suited for 3-ton residential and light-commercial split systems charged with R-454B. Fixed-bore metering pistons of this type are commonly found in the distributor assembly of the indoor coil or in a piston housing integral to the line set connection. This piston is appropriate for new installations as well as field replacements when converting or servicing equipment specified for R-454B refrigerant circuits.
Designed as an OEM-style fixed metering piston for 3-ton refrigerant systems operating on R-454B. Verify piston housing bore diameter and refrigerant circuit design before installation.
Installation should be performed by a licensed HVAC technician holding the appropriate EPA Section 608 certification for A2L refrigerants. Recover all refrigerant and depressurize the system before opening any refrigerant circuit. Confirm the piston orifice size and refrigerant type match the equipment nameplate before inserting the piston into the housing. Follow equipment manufacturer instructions and all applicable local mechanical codes when restoring refrigerant charge.
