The AMERICAN LOCK A40 is a rectangular steel-body padlock built for industrial and commercial security applications. The lock features a 1-1/2 inch wide body and a boron alloy shackle with a 1/4 inch diameter, 3/4 inch clearance width, and 1 inch height. A 5-pin tumbler cylinder provides resistance to picking and unauthorized key duplication. Keyed different, each A40 ships with its own unique key set, making it suited for installations where individual access control is required. This padlock is non-rekeyable, so the cylinder is fixed at the factory.
The A40 is used across a wide range of trade and industrial environments including HVAC unit lockout/tagout procedures, electrical panel access control, equipment yard gates, tool cribs, and storage enclosures. The compact 1-1/2 inch rectangular body fits standard hasps and lockout hardware. Its boron alloy shackle provides hardened cut resistance for outdoor or unsupervised installations where durability matters. Electricians, HVAC technicians, and facilities maintenance crews commonly use this padlock as part of lockout/tagout (LOTO) programs required under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147.
Designed as a standard-format rectangular padlock compatible with most commercial hasps, lockout/tagout devices, and gate hardware that accept a 1-1/2 inch padlock body with a 1/4 inch shackle diameter.
Installation requires no tools beyond fitting the shackle through the hasp or locking point and closing the locking mechanism. Verify shackle clearance dimensions match the hasp or anchor hardware before installation. For lockout/tagout applications, follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 authorized procedures and use only by qualified personnel. Do not force the shackle or use the padlock as a structural anchor point.
