The ALORIS CXA-54 is a Morse taper tool post holder designed for use with CXA-series quick-change tool post systems on engine lathes. It accepts a No. 4 Morse taper (4MT) shank, allowing direct mounting of drill bits, reamers, center drills, and other MT-shanked tooling into the tool post without a tailstock. The holder stands 2.125 inches overall height with a centerline height of 1.0625 inches. At 4.5 pounds, it is a solid, rigid unit built to handle interrupted cuts and repetitive tool changes without deflection. Licensed machinists and toolroom operators are the primary users of this holder.
This holder is suited for manual engine lathes with a swing range of 13 to 18 inches. It is a common tooling choice in job shops, maintenance departments, and production environments where drilling or reaming on-center from the carriage is preferred over tailstock operations. The CXA series is sized for mid-range lathes, and this holder follows the same quick-change interface as all CXA tooling, enabling fast, repeatable tool swaps at the carriage without losing centerline reference.

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. The lathe must be powered down and the spindle locked before seating or removing the holder from the tool post. Ensure the 4MT shank is clean and free of nicks before insertion, as surface damage will prevent full seating and affect concentricity. Torque the tool post clamping bolt to the tool post manufacturer's specification - do not overtighten, as this can distort the dovetail interface.
