The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING TM31224 is a helical flute thread mill designed for cutting both internal and external 5/16-24 UN threads in a single setup. Built from solid carbide and coated with TiAlN for heat and wear resistance, this tool delivers consistent thread quality in ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. It features a right-hand flute direction, 3 flutes, and a 0.235-inch cutting diameter with a 0.625-inch length of cut. The 1/4-inch shank fits standard CNC machining center collets. This tool is used by machinists and toolroom professionals running thread milling operations on CNC mill or machining center equipment.
The TM31224 suits production and toolroom applications where a single thread mill must handle both internal and external 5/16-24 thread forms. At 2.5 inches overall length and 24 teeth per inch, it is well-proportioned for reaching threads in shallow-to-moderate depth bores as well as external bosses. Solid carbide construction makes it appropriate for harder workpiece materials and higher spindle speeds compared to HSS alternatives. No coolant-through capability means external flood or mist coolant should be applied at the tool-workpiece interface during the milling cycle.
Designed as an OEM-style thread milling tool for CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation with a 1/4-inch collet or toolholder bore accepting a straight shank.
Thread mills require a CNC control capable of helical interpolation - confirm programmed tool path and lead-in move before cutting. Secure the 1/4-inch shank in a precision collet or end mill holder and verify runout with a dial indicator before the first pass. Power down and lock out the spindle before tool changes or shank inspection. External flood or mist coolant is recommended since this tool does not have through-coolant capability.
