The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 24040S-005I is a T-A 4 Series indexable spade drill designed for high-productivity hole-making in a wide range of metalworking applications. It accepts spade drill inserts covering a diameter range of 1-29/32 inches to 2-9/16 inches and reaches a maximum drill depth of 9-1/8 inches. The body features a straight flute geometry and a 5MT taper shank with a 1.7480-inch shank diameter. Through-coolant capability is provided via dual radial coolant entry ports with 1/4-inch NPT threads, keeping the cutting zone clear and extending insert life during extended drilling cycles. Installed by machinists and toolroom professionals on vertical and horizontal machining centers or drill presses equipped with a Morse taper spindle.
This spade drill body is suited for general-purpose drilling in universal workpiece materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, high-temp alloys, and hardened materials as indicated by the P, M, K, N, S, and H workpiece material codes. It is a standard-length body intended for production drilling environments where consistent hole depth and diameter range are required without tool changes. The 5MT taper shank mounts directly into compatible taper-socket spindles or sleeves without an additional adapter. A rotary coolant adapter compatible with the 2T-5SR adapter can be used to deliver through-coolant from the machine spindle.
Designed for use with T-A 4 Series indexable spade drill inserts in the corresponding diameter range. Rotary coolant adapter compatibility: 2T-5SR. Fits machine spindles or sleeves accepting a 5MT Morse taper shank.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully powered down and at a complete stop before mounting or removing the taper shank tool. Clean the taper shank and spindle socket thoroughly before seating to ensure full taper contact and runout accuracy. Verify insert seating and screw torque per the insert manufacturer's guidelines before initiating a cut, and confirm coolant supply connections are secure if through-coolant operation is used.
