The ALLIED MACHINE AND ENGINEERING 18ZT-0016 is a cobalt spade drill insert designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metal-cutting applications. Part of the T-A Series, this insert features a 132-degree point angle and a TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating that extends tool life and reduces friction at the cutting edge. The insert measures 0.5 inches in diameter with a seat size Z designation and a thickness of 0.0938 inches. It weighs approximately 0.1 pounds. Machinists and tool-room technicians install this insert into compatible T-A Series spade drill holders as a replaceable cutting element, making it a cost-effective solution for production drilling.
This insert is suited for drilling operations in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, super-alloys, titanium, and hard materials. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, manual mills, and production drilling setups where hole quality and tool longevity are priorities. The cobalt substrate provides added toughness and heat resistance compared to standard high-speed steel, making it a practical choice for interrupted cuts and work-hardening alloys encountered in industrial and job-shop environments.
Designed for use with T-A Series spade drill holders that accept seat size Z inserts. Verified primary workpiece material compatibility includes steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), super-alloys and titanium (S), and hard materials (H) per ISO material classification codes.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before removing or seating any insert. Seat the insert firmly against the holder pocket and confirm all clamping screws are tightened to the holder manufacturer's specified torque before resuming operation. Inspect the insert seat and holder pocket for chips or debris before each installation to maintain accurate positioning and prevent premature insert failure.
