The ACCUPRO T2640665 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 5/8-18 UNF right-hand threads in steel and similar ferrous materials. Built from 3% Vanadium High Speed Steel with a bright finish, it delivers a solid balance of toughness and wear resistance suited to production and maintenance threading operations. The plug chamfer configuration makes it appropriate for through-hole applications where the tap can advance freely through the workpiece. With 4 flutes and an H5 thread limit, it holds tight tolerances for a 2B class of fit, which is the standard for general-purpose unified inch thread assemblies in most industrial and mechanical applications.
This tap is used in through-hole threading of steel components across a wide range of industries including fabrication, maintenance repair, and machine shop work. The 5/8-18 UNF thread form is common in applications requiring finer thread pitch than standard coarse-pitch fasteners provide, such as hydraulic fittings, precision mechanical assemblies, and thin-wall tubing adapters. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap rather than packing them into the flutes, making it well suited for machine tapping in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. The tap is not designed for coolant-through use.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard production tap for through-hole threading of steels using 5/8-18 UNF thread forms in machine tapping and hand tapping operations.
Installation is performed by machinists and tool and die professionals. Always use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping oil when threading steel to extend tap life and reduce the risk of breakage. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole to prevent thread galling or tap breakage. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA guidelines when operating tapping equipment.
