The ACCUPRO 778600 is a taper shank tapping chuck designed for tension and compression tapping applications on CNC machining centers. It accepts a BT40 taper interface and handles maximum tap capacities up to 9/16 inch, making it suitable for a broad range of threading tasks in production environments. The chuck features a quick-change design with a Size 1 tap adapter connection, allowing fast tap swaps without removing the holder from the spindle. A 4.88-inch projection provides clearance for workpiece features and fixture walls. This tool is installed by machinists and tooling technicians in shops running BT40-spindle vertical or horizontal machining centers.
The 778600 is suited for production and job-shop environments where tapping is performed on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It is used in applications requiring controlled float along both the tension and compression axes to compensate for minor synchronization errors between spindle feed and tap pitch. The Size 1 adapter interface accepts a range of tap collets sized to the adapter standard. Through-coolant is not supported on this chuck, so external coolant or cutting fluid application is recommended when tapping materials that generate heat.
Designed for use with BT40-spindle CNC machining centers. Accepts Size 1 tap adapters. Maximum pipe tap capacity is 1/8 inch. Through-coolant is not supported.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Before mounting the chuck, ensure the machining center spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state. Clean the BT40 taper on both the chuck and spindle bore before seating to ensure full contact and runout accuracy. Follow the machine tool manufacturer torque specifications for the retention knob and verify draw-bar clamping force before operating.
