The ABBOTT WORKHOLDING PRODUCTS SMW12A is a serrated soft lathe chuck jaw machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, designed for use on manual and CNC lathe chuck assemblies. Soft jaws allow machinists and toolroom operators to bore or machine the jaw face to a custom grip profile, making them well-suited for holding irregular, delicate, or finish-machined workpieces without marking the surface. The SMW12A measures 5.5 inches overall length, 2 inches overall height, and 2 inches overall width, and is sold as a set of 3 jaws. The serrated interface provides positive location against the chuck body for repeatable jaw positioning.
This jaw set is intended for lathe chuck applications requiring a maximum compatible chuck diameter of 12 inches. The serrated jaw interface type is common in production turning environments, tool rooms, and job shops where jaws are routinely rebored to match specific workpiece diameters. Aluminum construction keeps rotating mass low, which is advantageous on high-speed turning applications. Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel familiar with lathe chuck jaw removal and installation procedures.
Compatible with lathe chucks up to 12 inches maximum chuck diameter that accept a serrated jaw interface with a slot width of 0.827 inches and mount hole center spacing of 1.181 inches.
Soft jaw installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the lathe powered down and the spindle locked. Ensure the serrated interface seats fully against the chuck body before torquing fasteners. After installation, bore the jaw faces to the required workpiece diameter before running the lathe under power. Follow the chuck manufacturer's torque and jaw engagement specifications for safe operation.
