The ABBOTT WORKHOLDING PRODUCTS KW4A is a soft lathe chuck jaw designed for use in serrated-interface lathe chucks. Machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, this jaw offers a lightweight, machinable body that allows machinists to bore custom profiles for workholding applications. The square jaw shape and serrated interface provide positive, repeatable seating against the chuck master jaw. Compatible with chucks up to 4 inches in diameter, the KW4A has an overall length of 2 inches and an overall width of 1 inch. It is sold and packaged as a single jaw. Mounting hole centers are spaced 0.5512 inches apart, and the fastener size is 0.315 inches.
The KW4A is used in manual and CNC lathe setups where a soft jaw is required for gripping custom, delicate, or irregularly shaped workpieces. Because it is aluminum, the jaw can be bored or turned to a specific inside diameter directly on the machine, producing a precision fit to the part being held. This is a common practice in job shop and production machining environments when gripping thin-walled parts, castings, or finished components that cannot sustain the marring risk of hardened jaws. The part is suited for light to medium turning operations on small to mid-size lathes using 4-inch chuck bodies.
Designed as a serrated soft jaw replacement or spare for 3-jaw lathe chucks with a maximum compatible chuck diameter of 4 inches and a 0.5512-inch mounting hole center distance. Verify serration pitch and fastener size against the chuck manufacturer specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by a machinist or lathe operator. Power down and lock out the lathe spindle before removing or installing chuck jaws. Use the correct fastener size of 0.315 inches as specified, and torque evenly to avoid jaw distortion. After mounting, bore the soft jaw in place on the chuck to achieve a true running grip surface before use.
