The ABBOTT WORKHOLDING PRODUCTS MTG10MDP is a soft lathe chuck jaw designed for tongue and groove chuck interfaces on engine lathes and CNC turning centers. Machined from 6061 aluminum, this jaw provides a machinable gripping surface that technicians can bore to a specific workpiece diameter for precise, repeatable fixturing. The jaw measures 10 inches in overall width, 2 inches in overall height, and features a tongue width of 0.787 inches with a groove width of 0.4724 inches. Mount hole centers are spaced 1.5748 inches apart to match the chuck's existing bolt pattern. Machinists and toolroom technicians install this part when a standard hard jaw cannot hold an irregularly shaped or finish-machined workpiece without marring the surface.
This jaw is suited for use in production machining, job shop turning, and toolroom applications where custom workholding is required. It is compatible with 10-inch diameter lathe chucks that use a tongue and groove interface. The 3-jaw set configuration supports chucking of round or near-round workpieces. Its aluminum construction reduces rotational mass compared to steel alternatives, which is useful when spindle load or chuck weight is a concern. Installation is performed by machinists who bore the jaw face to match the target workpiece diameter before use.
Designed for use with 10-inch lathe chucks equipped with a tongue and groove jaw interface. Both the minimum and maximum compatible chuck diameter are 10 inches, confirming a dedicated fit for that chuck size.
Installation and boring of soft jaws should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with lathe workholding procedures. Power down and lock out the lathe spindle before removing or installing chuck jaws. Secure all fasteners to the chuck manufacturer's specified torque using appropriately sized hardware matching the 0.4724-inch fastener size. Bore the jaw face while mounted in the chuck under light pre-load to ensure the bored diameter is true to the spindle centerline before production use.
