The 3M COMPANY 20907-180 is a 180-grit sanding sponge block designed for fine sanding between coats of paint or varnish. The block uses electrostatically coated aluminum oxide mineral, a process that orients abrasive particles for more consistent scratch patterns and extended working life compared to conventionally coated abrasives. Its flexible sponge backing conforms to flat and slightly contoured surfaces, making it well-suited for finish-coat prep work where surface uniformity matters. Finishing contractors, painters, and cabinet shop technicians are the typical users.
This sanding block is used in residential and light commercial finishing applications where smooth intercoat surfaces are required before applying a final topcoat. It is appropriate for wood, previously painted surfaces, and cured varnish layers. The 180-grit classification places it in the fine-abrasive range, making it most effective for scuff-sanding rather than material removal. Each unit is sold individually, with 12 units per package.
Designed as a general-purpose fine-grit sanding block suitable for intercoat finishing on wood, painted drywall, and cured varnish surfaces in standard paint and finishing applications.
No power tools or specialized equipment are required for use. Ensure the previous coat is fully cured before sanding to avoid loading the abrasive or lifting the finish. Sand with light, even pressure using consistent strokes, and remove all sanding dust before applying the next coat. Dispose of used abrasive blocks in accordance with local waste guidelines, particularly when working with lead-based or solvent-based coatings.
