The 3M 7100178439 is a Cubitron II 987C coated fiber disc engineered for medium to heavy-duty grinding and material removal in industrial and fabrication environments. The disc uses 3M Precision-Shaped Grain, a triangular ceramic abrasive mineral that maintains sharp cutting points longer than conventional abrasives. The result is a higher cut rate at lower grinding pressure, reduced heat generation at the workpiece, and extended disc life compared to standard fiber discs. A stiff fiber backing combined with a strong resin bond provides tear resistance under aggressive load conditions. Rated at 6,600 rpm, this disc is built for high-demand applications including weld grinding and beveling on heat-sensitive alloys.
This disc is suited for robotic grinding lines, pressure-assisted grinders, and manual angle grinder setups in fabrication, welding, and heavy metalworking operations. The 9.125-inch diameter and 60-grit designation make it appropriate for aggressive stock removal and weld prep on structural steel, stainless steel, and heat-sensitive alloys. The incorporated grinding aid minimizes surface temperatures, making it a practical choice where discoloration or metallurgical changes from heat are a concern. Fewer disc changes per shift reduce downtime in high-volume production settings.
Designed for use with angle grinders and pressure-assisted grinding equipment capable of accommodating a 9.125-inch diameter fiber disc at a maximum speed of 6,600 rpm.
This disc must be mounted only on grinders rated for the disc diameter and maximum rpm listed on the disc. Always inspect the disc for damage before mounting and ensure the backing pad matches the disc diameter. Confirm the grinder guard is in place before operation. Follow applicable ANSI B11 and OSHA 1910.215 guidelines for abrasive wheel machinery when mounting and operating fiber discs.
