The 3M 7000046032 is a Scotch-Brite hook-and-loop coating removal disc engineered for aggressive surface prep on metal. Built from open-web, non-woven material impregnated with extra coarse (XCS) silicon carbide mineral, this disc strips paint, rust, and welding scale without gouging or undercutting the base material. At 4.5 inches in diameter with a maximum operating speed of 12,000 RPM, it is designed for use with angle grinders and random orbital tools equipped with a compatible hook-and-loop backing pad. Licensed tradespeople in fabrication, maintenance, and industrial coating work are the primary installers and users.
This disc is well-suited for metal surface preparation ahead of priming or painting, weld seam cleanup, and removal of mill scale or discoloration on ferrous and non-ferrous substrates. The open-web construction runs cool during extended operation, reducing heat transfer to the workpiece and resisting mineral loading. It is particularly effective on hard, flat, or contoured surfaces where maintaining the original geometry of the workpiece is a priority. The hook-and-loop attachment system allows fast disc swaps during multi-step finishing sequences.
Designed for use with angle grinders and hook-and-loop backing pads rated for use with 4.5-inch discs at up to 12,000 RPM.
Installation and operation should be performed by qualified personnel familiar with abrasive disc safety practices. Verify that the backing pad and grinder are rated for a minimum of 12,000 RPM before mounting the disc. Inspect the disc for damage before each use and ensure the hook-and-loop interface is fully engaged. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and a dust respirator when operating abrasive discs on metal surfaces.
