The MSA SAFETY 10165446 is the ALTAIR 5X multi-gas detector, a portable instrument designed to continuously monitor four atmospheric hazards simultaneously: carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, combustible gas (LEL), and oxygen. It uses an integrated sampling pump to actively draw air through a probe or sampling line, making it well-suited for pre-entry testing and confined space assessment where passive diffusion is not practical. The unit delivers direct-read digital output on a monochrome display and triggers three alert types — audible at 95 dB, visual LED, and vibration — when gas concentrations cross programmed alarm thresholds. Battery life is rated at 20 hours on its rechargeable lithium ion pack. Sensor and battery replacement are both field-serviceable without depot return.
The ALTAIR 5X is built for industrial and occupational safety applications where workers may encounter oxygen-deficient or oxygen-enriched atmospheres, toxic gases, or flammable vapor accumulations. Typical deployment scenarios include entering confined spaces such as manholes, tanks, and vaults; pre-entry atmospheric checks in petrochemical and utility environments; and continuous personal monitoring during maintenance on gas-handling systems. The IP65 housing and rubber construction handle wet, dusty, and chemically aggressive field conditions. Rated for use in Class I Division 1 Group A, B, C, D and Class II Division 1 Group E, F, G hazardous locations, it meets the electrical classification requirements common to refineries, chemical plants, and similar sites. The included 1-foot probe and 10-foot sampling line extend reach into spaces where direct instrument insertion is impractical.
The 10165446 is part of the MSA ALTAIR 5X platform, which supports interchangeable sensors and is configured as shipped with carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, combustible LEL, and oxygen sensors. Industrial hygienists, safety technicians, and licensed confined space entry supervisors typically commission and calibrate this instrument. Before each use, perform a bump test and confirm alarm thresholds match the site permit requirements. Charge the unit fully before deployment and verify the sampling pump draws correctly through the probe and line assembly. Calibration should be performed with certified reference gas mixtures traceable to NIST standards; calibration equipment is not included with this unit.
