The EWC CONTROLS 12 SBD is a 12-inch self-balancing smart bypass damper designed for zoned HVAC systems where automatic pressure regulation is required. Using a barometric bypass design with a uniquely engineered blade, the 12 SBD eliminates the need for measuring instruments, adjustable weights, or manual spring calibration during setup. The result is a faster, repeatable bypass installation that meets ACCA Manual Zr compliance requirements. Constructed from steel and rated for 50/60 Hz operation, this damper draws between 1.5 and 4 amps depending on system conditions. It is installed by licensed HVAC technicians as part of a zoned duct system.
The 12 SBD is suited for residential and light-commercial zoned forced-air systems where a bypass damper is required to relieve excess static pressure when zone dampers close. Because the unit is self-balancing, there is no need to install a separate bypass balancing hand damper alongside it. This simplifies duct layouts and reduces commissioning time on multi-zone retrofits and new installations alike. Systems using conventional zone control panels with standard bypass duct configurations are the primary application.
Designed as an OEM-style bypass damper for zoned forced-air HVAC duct systems requiring a 12-inch barometric bypass damper installation.
Installation should be performed by a licensed HVAC technician familiar with zoned duct system design and ACCA Manual Zr guidelines. Shut down the air handler and de-energize the zone control panel before installing or wiring the damper. Follow the manufacturer wiring diagram for low-voltage control connections and verify the bypass duct is sized appropriately for the system. Do not restrict the damper blade movement after installation, as the self-balancing function depends on unrestricted blade travel.
