The XTRWELD WTCER2040 is a 2 percent ceriated tungsten electrode sized at 0.040 inches, sold in a 10-piece pack with gray color coding for quick identification. Designed for gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), these electrodes carry welding current from the torch to the arc using tungsten's exceptional hardness and high-temperature resistance. Tungsten holds the highest melting point of any metal at 3,410 degrees Celsius, making it the standard choice for GTAW electrode construction. The cerium oxide content improves arc starting at low amperages and supports stable arc performance across DC welding applications. Licensed welders and certified welding fabricators are the primary installers of this consumable.
These electrodes perform best in DC welding at low current settings and are well suited for precision work including orbital tube and pipe fabricating, thin sheet metal work, and jobs involving small or delicate parts. They can also be used in AC processes. Ceriated tungsten is effective for welding carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium. In many shop and field scenarios, the WTCER2040 can serve as a direct replacement for 2 percent thoriated electrodes. The electrical characteristics of ceriated tungsten are slightly different from thoriated tungsten, but performance in most practical welding situations is comparable.
Designed for use in DC GTAW (TIG) welding applications including orbital tube and pipe fabricating, thin sheet metal work, and small-part welding. Can be used in AC processes and may replace 2 percent thoriated tungsten electrodes in compatible torch setups.
Installation and electrode preparation should be performed by a qualified welder or welding technician familiar with GTAW torch setup. Ensure the welding machine is powered down and the torch is cool before changing electrodes. Grind the electrode tip to the appropriate geometry for the intended application using a dedicated tungsten grinder to avoid contamination. Follow applicable AWS and shop safety standards when handling and disposing of welding consumables.
