The WILKINS xt-8 is a thermal expansion tank designed to protect residential potable hot water systems from pressure buildup caused by thermal expansion. When a backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve creates a closed system, heated water has nowhere to go — the xt-8 absorbs that excess pressure before it can stress the water heater, pipes, or fittings. The tank holds a total volume of 2.1 gallons with a 1.0 gallon acceptance capacity, and connects via a 3/4 inch NPT fitting. Plumbers install this tank on the cold water supply line between the backflow preventer or PRV and the water heater inlet.
The xt-8 is suited for residential potable water installations where a closed system condition exists due to a backflow preventer, check valve, or pressure reducing valve. It is positioned on the cold water supply line upstream of the water heater to relieve thermal expansion pressure spikes during the heating cycle. This tank is intended for use in single-family and light residential applications with standard domestic water heaters, both gas and electric.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and new-installation thermal expansion tank for residential closed potable hot water systems protected by a backflow preventer or pressure reducing valve.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the water supply and depressurize the system before installation. The tank should be installed on the cold water supply line between the backflow preventer or PRV and the water heater — do not install on the hot side of the water heater. Verify the tank pre-charge pressure matches the system static water pressure before placing the system back in service.
