The WHITE-RODGERS 90-65 is a potential relay designed for single-phase compressor motor starting circuits in HVAC heating systems. It operates on a 336 VAC coil and features a pickup range of 171-184 VAC, making it suitable for a wide range of single-phase hermetic compressor applications. The relay is rated for continuous duty across a temperature range of -40 degrees F to 130 degrees F and functions at both 50 and 60 Hz. With a dropout maximum of 90 VAC and a DC resistance of 5,180 ohms, the 90-65 provides reliable start-capacitor switching to assist compressor motor startup and then remove the start capacitor from the circuit once the motor reaches operating speed.
This potential relay is used in residential and light commercial HVAC equipment where single-phase hermetic or semi-hermetic compressors require external start assistance. Typical installations include air conditioning condensing units, heat pumps, and refrigeration equipment fitted with permanent split-capacitor or capacitor-start compressor motors. Licensed HVAC technicians install this relay as part of a hard-start kit or as a direct replacement when compressor start failures are traced to a faulty potential relay.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement potential relay for single-phase hermetic compressor motor starting circuits in residential and light commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
Installation of a potential relay should be performed by a licensed HVAC technician. Disconnect and lock out all power to the unit before removing the existing relay or handling start and run capacitors, as capacitors can retain a dangerous charge. Verify coil voltage and pickup range against the compressor nameplate data before installing this relay to confirm compatibility. Follow applicable NEC requirements and equipment manufacturer wiring diagrams when making control circuit connections.
