The WATTS 9878 is a lead-free dielectric union from the LF3003 series, designed to isolate dissimilar metal pipe connections in potable water and plumbing systems. It features a female iron pipe thread to female brass pipe thread (FNPT x FNPT) configuration in a 1-1/2 inch size. The union uses a dielectric insulating barrier to interrupt galvanic current flow and stray current transfer between connected pipe materials, preventing accelerated corrosion and premature deterioration of the piping system. Licensed plumbers and pipefitters install this fitting wherever copper meets steel or iron pipe runs.
The WATTS 9878 LF3003 is suited for residential and light commercial plumbing installations where dissimilar metal piping systems connect, such as water heater supply and return lines, main distribution piping, and branch connections that transition between steel and copper. Its lead-free construction makes it appropriate for use in potable water systems where lead-free compliance is required by local codes.

Installation is performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with applicable local plumbing codes and the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Shut off the water supply and relieve system pressure before removing any existing fitting or installing this union. Use appropriate thread sealant rated for potable water on all threaded connections. Do not over-tighten threaded joints, as this can crack the internal dielectric sleeve and compromise the galvanic isolation function.
