The WALTER-PROTOTYP 6580446 is a solid carbide helical flute thread mill designed for cutting internal UNF threads at 9/16-18. It produces right-hand threads in a single helical pass, eliminating the need for a dedicated tap in many CNC milling applications. The tool carries a TiAlN coating that resists heat and wear at elevated cutting speeds, extending tool life in ferrous and hardened materials. With 5 flutes and a cutting diameter of 0.394 inches, this thread mill delivers precise thread geometry in through-holes and blind holes. It is sized for use in machining centers and CNC mills capable of helical interpolation. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users.
This thread mill is intended for internal threading operations in materials where a solid carbide substrate and TiAlN coating provide a performance advantage over HSS taps, including alloy steels, stainless steels, and cast irons. It is well suited to production runs where tool consistency and repeatability across a batch of 9/16-18 UNF tapped holes is critical. The coolant-through design supports chip evacuation in deep or blind-hole applications, reducing recutting and thread-form degradation. The 0.888-inch length of cut accommodates standard thread engagement depths for the 9/16-18 thread class.
Designed as an OEM-style thread mill for CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation, targeting internal 9/16-18 UNF thread applications in ferrous and hard materials.
Installation and programming should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling specialist familiar with helical interpolation cycles. Secure the shank in a properly sized collet or shrink-fit holder before operation and verify runout does not exceed the tolerance required by the thread class. Power down and lock out the spindle before any tool change or holder inspection. Program the helical pitch to match the 18 TPI thread specification and confirm the interpolation radius accounts for the tool cutting diameter.
