The WALTER 8116021 is a triangular carbide turning insert in the TNMG series, designed for external and internal metal cutting operations on CNC and manual lathes. Manufactured to ANSI and ISO standards, it carries the industry designation TNMG431-MP5 WPP20G and features a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN applied over a solid carbide substrate. The MP5 chip breaker geometry is optimized for roughing and medium machining passes. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 0.866-inch insert length, and a 0.016-inch corner radius, this insert delivers controlled chip formation and edge stability under moderate to aggressive material removal rates. It is installed and changed by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel and cast iron workpieces. The WPP20G grade targets ISO P20 steel and K30 cast iron applications, making it appropriate for general-purpose production turning in job shops, tier suppliers, and maintenance machining environments. The neutral hand orientation allows use in standard right-hand toolholders without lateral offset. Six cutting edges per insert reduce per-edge tooling cost in high-volume operations. Compatible TNMG-style toolholders accept this insert via clamp or pin holding methods.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for TNMG-series toolholders accepting clamp or pin holding with an ANSI size code of 431 and ISO size code of 220404. Primary workpiece material is steel; secondary workpiece material is cast iron.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked. Use the toolholder manufacturer's recommended torx or hex key torque procedure for the clamp screw or pin to ensure proper seating without over-stress. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before indexing to a fresh cutting edge. Disposal of worn carbide inserts should follow applicable facility and local regulations for metallic waste.
