The WALTER 7170569 is a square SDMT-style indexable milling insert in grade WKP35G, designed for face and shoulder milling operations in steel and cast iron. The insert is manufactured from solid carbide and carries a CVD-applied TiAlN and TiN coating for thermal resistance and edge durability. Key dimensional specs include a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch) thickness, and a 0.031 inch (0.80 mm) corner radius. With four honed cutting edges, a positive rake angle of 10 degrees, and a 15-degree relief angle, this insert delivers controlled chip formation and reduced cutting forces across a range of milling applications. It is held in the toolholder by a screw-clamp method.
This insert is suited for milling steel and cast iron workpieces in both roughing and semi-finishing operations. The D57 chip breaker geometry targets reliable chip control in these materials. The insert is right-hand cutting and supports a maximum depth of cut of 0.5 inch (12.70 mm), making it appropriate for productive passes in production machining environments. It is compatible with the Walter M4000 cutter series. Installation and indexing are performed by machining technicians or toolroom personnel as part of a standard insert changeout routine.
Designed for use in the Walter M4000 cutter series. ANSI and ISO code: SDMT1204ZDR-D57 WKP35G. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K).
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machining technician with the spindle locked and machine power isolated per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer's specified seating procedure when securing the clamping screw. Inspect the pocket seat for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination will cause insert rocking and premature edge failure. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating for the cutter body series in use.
