The WALTER 7091932 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNMG-FM5 series, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying ISO designation VNMG160404-FM5 WSM10S and ANSI code VNMG331, this insert features a multilayer PVD coating of TiAlN, Al2O3, and Al for elevated heat resistance and edge durability. The FM5 chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing operations, delivering tight chip control at lower depths of cut. With four usable cutting edges and a neutral hand orientation, it suits a wide range of tool holder configurations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working on tight-tolerance turned components rely on inserts of this specification for consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel and superalloys and titanium workpiece materials, with secondary suitability for steel. It is built for finishing passes and applies across turning, facing, boring, and back-turning operations. The 35-degree diamond V-shape provides clearance in tight approach angles, and the chamfered and honed cutting edge style reduces chipping when entering interrupted or work-hardened surfaces. It is well suited to both small-batch precision work and production turning in aerospace, medical, and industrial manufacturing environments where stainless and high-temp alloys are common.
Designed for use in tool holders accepting VNMG331 (ANSI) or VNMG160404 (ISO) inserts with clamp or pin holding methods. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S); secondary application covers steel (ISO code P). Material grades M1, S10, and P10 apply.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or tool and die technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Ensure the insert pocket and seating surface are clean and free of debris before clamping to maintain accurate insert positioning and prevent premature edge failure. Follow the tool holder manufacturer torque specifications for clamp screws, and verify depth-of-cut settings against the maximum depth of cut rating of 16.61 mm before running production.
