The WALTER 7053901 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for high-performance metal removal on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It carries the ISO designation CNMG120408-NRS and uses the WSM20S proprietary grade with a multilayer PVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Al for wear resistance and thermal stability. The 80-degree diamond shape (CNMG) provides a strong cutting edge geometry with a negative rake angle of 19 degrees and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. With a 0.8 mm corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 12.9 mm, it handles roughing to semi-finishing passes in demanding turning, facing, and boring applications. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers.
This insert is rated for material grades M20, S20, and P20, making it well suited for production turning of stainless steel and nickel- or titanium-based superalloys as primary workpiece materials, with general steel as a secondary application. The NRS chip breaker geometry is engineered to control chip flow in these tough-to-machine materials. It is held in the tool holder by clamp and pin mounting and fits standard CNMG-style toolholders common in both manual and CNC turning centers across industrial and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2-inch (12.70 mm) inscribed circle insert with clamp and pin holding. Compatible with CNC turning centers and manual lathes running stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and steel workpieces at M20, S20, and P20 material grades.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and de-energize the machine spindle before seating or indexing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamp pin are clean and free of chips before placing the insert to prevent seating errors. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamp torque specifications and verify insert seating visually before resuming cutting operations.
