The WALTER 7053862 is a VNMG-style indexable carbide turning insert in grade WSM20S, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a multilayer PVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Al, providing wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding cutting applications. The insert has a 35-degree diamond shape, a neutral hand orientation, a 0.4 mm corner radius, and four usable cutting edges. With an inscribed circle of 9.53 mm (0.375 inches) and a maximum depth of cut of 16.61 mm (0.654 inches), it is built for moderate to aggressive material removal in production environments. Machining professionals and CNC tooling specialists install this insert as part of a qualified toolholder system.
This insert is primarily rated for stainless steel and superalloys and titanium (ISO material codes M and S), with secondary suitability for steel (ISO code P). The NMS chip breaker geometry, combined with a chamfered and honed cutting edge and an 18-degree rake angle, supports turning, facing, boring, and back-turning operations. It is well suited for shops running aerospace, medical, and general industrial components where workpiece material toughness demands a tough, wear-resistant substrate and a reliable chip control geometry.
Designed as a direct replacement for industry-standard VNMG160404-NMS geometry inserts in qualified VNMG toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Industry standard number VNMG331-NMS WSM20S. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces and secure with the clamp and pin per the toolholder manufacturer torque specification. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker for damage before initiating a cut.
