The WALTER 6955183 is a grooving insert designed for precision external grooving operations in demanding machining environments. Built to the GX-E-UF8 series standard, this insert carries the WSM23S manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied Al2O3 and aluminum coating for extended tool life under high heat and abrasion. The cutting width measures 0.079 inches (2.00 mm) with a corner radius of 0.008 inches (0.20 mm), making it suited for tight-tolerance groove profiles. The UF8 chip breaker geometry supports consistent chip control during finishing passes. Installed by machinists and tooling specialists in CNC turning and grooving applications, this insert is a multi-use tooling component conforming to both ANSI and ISO standards.
This insert is intended for use on superalloys as the primary workpiece material, corresponding to material codes M, P, and S. The GX-E-UF8 series geometry and WSM23S grade combination is engineered for finishing cuts on difficult-to-machine alloys where heat resistance and edge stability are critical. Typical applications include aerospace component grooving, medical part turning, and high-temperature alloy machining where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are required. The ANSI code for this insert is GX161E200N02UF8 WSM23S and the ISO code is GX161E200N02UF8 WSM23S.
Designed for use in GX-E-UF8 series toolholders. Compatible insert style is GX with insert size code 1E200N02. Refer to the WALTER GX system toolholder lineup to confirm pocket and clamping compatibility before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with indexable insert systems. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or clamp screw driver specified for the toolholder to secure the insert without overtightening. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or damage before each insert change to maintain accurate seating and cutting geometry.
