The WALTER 6944758 is a WNMG080408-RM5 WSM30S solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. It features an 80-degree trigon insert shape with a negative rake angle of 20 degrees, a chamfered and honed cutting edge, and a PVD-applied TiCN, Al2O3, and Al coating under the proprietary WSM30S grade. The RM5 chip breaker geometry supports turning, facing, and boring operations. With six cutting edges per insert and a 0.031 inches corner radius, this insert delivers consistent performance across a range of difficult-to-machine materials. Licensed HVAC technicians, machinists, and tooling specialists install this insert in standard WNMG-compatible toolholders secured by clamp or pin holding methods.
This insert is suited for medium to semi-finish turning applications on stainless steel and superalloys in both production and job-shop environments. The WSM30S grade targets ISO material groups M30 and S30, with secondary suitability for P30 steel. It is also listed under the industry-standard number WNMG432-RM5 WSM30S and complies with both ANSI and ISO standards. Applications include external turning, facing passes, and light boring cycles where edge security and surface finish consistency are required. The neutral hand orientation makes it adaptable to a range of toolholder configurations without re-indexing the setup.
Designed for use in WNMG-style toolholders that accept clamp or pin holding methods. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for WNMG080408 inserts. Also identified by industry-standard number WNMG432-RM5 WSM30S. Verify toolholder bore diameter compatibility with the 0.203 inches insert hole diameter before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians following standard insert indexing procedures. Shut down the machine spindle and confirm zero rotation before seating or indexing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench for the clamp screw per the toolholder manufacturer specification - do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle under bending stress. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a new edge.
