The WALTER 6917256 is a solid carbide coated turning insert in the DCMT070208-FM4 WSM10S configuration, designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding machining environments. It features a 55-degree diamond insert shape with a positive rake geometry and an FM4 chip breaker for effective chip control. The TiAlN, Al2O3, and Al multilayer PVD coating is applied under the proprietary WSM10S grade designation, part of the Tiger-tec Silver series. This insert is used by machinists and CNC operators in production turning, facing, boring, and back-turning operations where consistent edge life and thermal resistance are critical.
This insert is engineered primarily for stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpiece materials, with secondary application in steel. The FM4 chip breaker geometry is suited to medium finishing and semi-finishing passes at controlled depths of cut. At a maximum depth of cut of 0.1000 inches (1.50 mm), it is best applied in light-to-medium finishing contexts where tight tolerances and surface finish quality are priorities. The insert holds an inscribed circle of 0.2500 inches and a corner radius of 0.0315 inches (0.80 mm), making it appropriate for fine finishing passes on turned components.
Designed for use in DCMT-style screw-on turning toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. Compatible with toolholders accepting a DCMT 21.52 insert size with a 0.1100-inch hole diameter. Verified ISO code: DCMT070208-FM4 WSM10S. Industry standard number: DCMT2(1.5)2-FM4 WSM10S.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Always power down and de-energize the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the screw-clamp mechanism to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure without over-torquing the mounting screw. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure correct geometry registration.
